Howdy tec savvy Chockstoners,

OK this may not sound like a topic for a climbing forum, but really this drive is all my climbing guides and get this, my other copy has died too.

There is a professional data recovery place in the city which charges $800 and is likely to be a good bet (but I'd rather try and find another option!).

Would anyone be good at replacing logic boards on portable USB drives (it's a 3TB Seagate "Barracuda" drive, bought from Officeworks).

I've taken it to my local computer dude (Fangs computers, Lygon Street Brunswick) and been told it's the logic board as opposed to the drive itsef that's buggered. He said he wasn't really equipped to replace logic boards and referred me onto PAYAM (L7, 606 St Kilda Rd Melbourne - the $800 option).

Does anyone have these skills (and is based in Melbourne) I could ask for a hand?

More than likely the drive is good and the enclosure electronics have failed.
Plug the bare drive out of it's case into another computer or external drive caddy and you will probably get all of your data.
Failing that, if you can get a hold of an identical drive swapping the actual HDD logic board onto yours may bring it back to life. This only takes a few minutes.

If that doesn't work, next thing is open it up and look for stuck heads or stuck spindle bearing.
Anything past that and you will spend the rest of your life paying it off.

If you were close I would sort it for you.

Thanks so much - very helpful. Hopfully armed with that info I'll be able to deal with it locally!

Agreed, it's also often the USB port that gets dodgy.
Especially if it is/was intermittent I'd try there first.

Either way, the solution is the same:

Unless its a smaller style portable, then they usually have a standard drive inside, just take the case apart, take the drive itself out, and plug it into a spare SATA port, plus some power and it should work.
