John Smoothy (Crunch) has died at 56.

Crunch passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning. He was with his wife Gemma and a small group of family and friends. After a very long and tough struggle he died comfortably and peacefully surrounded by people who loved him.

John Smoothy was a true legend of Blue Mts climbing and if you have climbed in the mts then you have climbed at crags he opened and on classics that he put up. If you ever met him you probably counted him as a friend. He seemed to know everyone.

He was the best climber I've ever known and he was my best mate.

A lot of people will miss you, Crunch.

G.

Sad news - I only met and climbed with him a couple of times a long long time ago but it was enough to know he was a great guy. The first time I met him was in 88 and I was trying to make sense of a hand drawn topo of centennial glen. We were a couple of teenagers on a road trip sleeping at the crag. After showing us a couple of climbs he invited us back for dinner and to crash at his house and have a much needed shower.

Say no more - legend.

Sad to hear of another legend passing away... his legacy and vision will live on, though, in those who jump on his routes... Routes put up by that era's true LOCAL Blueys climber...

Thanks very much for the post, Glenn. I know how hard it must have been for you to write. He will be so much missed, but he has left us a fine legacy in the climbs he put up and in his inclusive approach to climbing.

That's sad news. I only met Crunch once, and that was over 30 years ago, but I always remembered him as a nice bloke and fun to climb with. My condolences to his family and friends.

That is very sad news. I only climbed with Crunch a couple of times, a very long time ago, but he was a nice guy and funny as well. The sheer volume of new routes he put up in the Blueys is unbelievable. My clearest memory of him is sitting at the top of Eighty Minute Hour watching him do an early repeat of Fantastic Voyage, directly opposite across the gully. His calm lead of a quite runout route was impressive. Smooth in name and smooth in action.
