They are great. I have several and have been using them for about 20 years now!
Easily worn under a helmet, or fit inside your cargo pants pocket when not required; configure in multiple ways with cleverly placed velcro tabs, to keep warm/cool as needed; effective in water related activities too; and even speed rated (unofficially by me), to stay on when doing 30 knots on a windy day in an open runabout boat!

When they were first made (in Qld I believe), we used to call them 'Arafats' because they were a novel concept and made the wearer look like the late Yassar...
The 'ute' is a pocket on the flap, originally designed to hold a packet of cigarettes, but works well for other items like storing your wristwatch while you jamB the next crack on a multipitch!

I've got a Frillneck as well and it's great. Just don't like wearing it under my helmet.

The product I like to use is called Climbinthefuchinshadeyouretards (quite an awkward name really). Not stocked by North Face outlets in Australia, it can be found at west facing outlets until noon, east facing retailers open sometime in the afternoon, and south facing stores are open most of the day.

Bloody hell. That about wraps it up for the millinery industry then.

Quite the contrary...it's people like ODH that keep 'em in business. Even if it is a $20 hat every 5 years.

That writes off many a route in summer at Booroomba bro, and lends itself to becoming a bouldrerer instead of a climber with gonads.

Kieran,

How did Da field testing go? Recommend it over the frillneck? Would it fit over a bike helmet as well?

I heard it was a complete failure. Apparently it made him so cool that he didn’t get any climbing done - he was too busy dealing with a large posse of newbies that just wanted to ‘hang out with the old bloke in the cool wide brim helmet thing’ ;-)

So far only used it once, for rescue practice on Saturday and it went really well on that, 4 hours in direct sun on a mild but sunny day. Frillneck is going to give better all around protection but I like having ventilation on a hot day. I try to avoid climbing in the sun on those days anyway. The collapsible dabrim rolls up and has a carry strap so it's easy to hang off the back of the harness and pull onto the helmet if you get into the sun later in the day (or vice-versa).
Fitting on a bike helmet as well? There are dire warnings all over the product info saying that you shouldn't do this. Whether this is just US overkill because of litigation fears, marketing or based on something real I couldn't say. May have something to do with a lot of bike helmets having a rudimentary visor.
So, after first real use, I like it. As a bonus it makes me look even more ridiculous than usual.

Unfortunately Shortman has first dibs on the photos so you'll have to wait for the next fashion spread in Argus.

Doubt it's US-related as bike helmets aren't even mandatory in the US for adults. Neither are full-face helmets on motorbikes, for that matter. So for all the perceived nambypambyism in the US, the reality is that it's less regulated than Australia in some ways.

Note: I'm not advocating helmet laws should be relaxed in Australia - the number of fixie-riding, helmet-allergic idiots who have accidents here is good evidence in support of such laws.

The warnings seem more about avoiding liability for injury caused by using the product for something it wasn't designed for rather than whether bike helmets are required by law. They seemed out of proportion to the degree of injury that could be caused by inappropriate use of a visor.

Thanks Kieran,

I had a look at the Dabrim website and there were separate models for climbing, cycling and horseriding.

I'm a bit surprised by the warning as it looks like it would stretch around a different shaped helmet fairly easily.

I've heard that you can unstitch it and rap off it?

Does anyone know if this is true?

Cool. Did you find the reinforced edges helped with stability when speed climbing?

No but the wings increase downforce which helps on slabs.

Just got some spam in my Inbox touting "Tuesday's Hot Buys" and it seemed appropriate to bump this thread given the hot weather.

It's really not the weather for climbing in Vic unless you're at Buffalo and even there Lake Catani is probably the better option. Temp in Horsham is currently 43.5 if the WWW is to be believed.
