Thanks to all the cool people who made the Alford's Point Crag Cleanup day a success!
We moved 180kg of general rubbish and 300kg of scrap metal, including a bashed-up wheelie bin, a very skanky double mattress, an engine block and an old car wreck!
Although the crag has great access for climbers, the 4 minute scramble quickly became a pain with all those hessian bags full of rubbish so we rigged a hauling system and hauled everything up to the road. Then Monty turned up with his "El Cap" haul bag and doubled our hauling capacity!
After a great BBQ feast put on by George, everyone was well fed and eager to start cranking. The crag is somewhat notorious for sandbagging, so after most of the main routes got a few ascents we were able to get some consensus on the grades and the new Sydney Climbing Guide Volume 1 will have updated grades. (will be available to buy next week, hopefully!!, if monty punches his new routes in) Most routes got one or two grades added, but its still a great crag for leaders 16-21 (or top roping is easy, you access the crag from above). The recent rebolting makes it a great fun sport crag. Together with easy access, river views and now beautiful clean surroundings, you can't beat it for climbing so close to home!
Thanks to the Sydney Rockies Access Fund for covering the trailer hire & tip fee.
How we gonna move this?
Bits of an old car being lugged up.
Hauling loads up the cliff.
Job done!
George cooking up a feast.... mmmm mmmm

Rod wasn't so happy when I tied this old tyre onto the haul line!
I'm guessing there was so much rubbish down there because nongs would park at the truck pullover and toss stuff off the cliff. Now that there is a barrier and a cycle path between the road and the cliff, hopefully no more rubbish ends up down in the National Park!

Great day out and proof that many hands make light work. The place looks spotless now! It was a dump before and now i can't even spot a single bit of broken glass.

Brilliant work! Let's hope the new clean look will deter those considering their next cliff 'dump throw'. Hmm, that haul bag of Neils - I've got the perfect job for that this weekend. Shame it's in NSW

Why is everyone calling Neil a "haul bag"?
And great job everyone - it's awesome to see the local crags getting some attention!
