actually it's unlikely to against any decent spammers, but like all security it's another layer and it probably has a high chance of stopping the current spam problems. Captcha's are not a panacea though.

There is a ton of things that should be done to secure this forum and make it more resistant to these types of attacks, but the fact that it's survived this long in it's current state suggest that there is no real interest in anyone taking advantage of it's holes (or pure luck, take your pick). A few simple steps should be sufficient to stop the existing problem but as you say, they require some work.
