Hi phil, I have a Plastic boot and Silvretta 500 binding setup that i use. I found that they served their purpose quite well. I'm not a crash hot skier but they were infinitely more comfortable to use than purpose built ski mountaneering boots. (I ski in my Scarpa Vega/Inverno). I bought a pair of Salomon Pro Thermic and took them out to lake mountain to see how they went, and they were fine as well. Most guides in NZ use Fritschi Daimir but i'm not sure if they fit mountaineering boots. The Silvretta bindings don't have a toe release, but from the research i did prior to purchase (i've had them 18 months) it didn't seem to have a lot of risk associated with it. In fact i learnt that the American 10th Mountain division (If i remember correctly) skis in Scarpas and Silvretta bindings and you actually learn better technique by doing so. I haven't skied black diamond runs and super fast as i'm not experienced enough, so can't tell you how they perform in those situations but they are fine for touring and blue runs. The lack of ankle support i never found to be a problem you get used to it and it helps when your'e touring.
