Dont use too large a diameter as it will not work on some ropes. I had a pair of 7mm chords and tried to prussik up after a fall from the roof of Kachoong. It wouldnt grip the rope with a standard prussik. As for the lengths. longer one-double the length from your foot to your waist plus .5m for the knot. shorter one -double length from waist to chin plus .5m for knot. Try this and then shorten if necessary.
