I'm pretty sure that Black Diamond recommend that you do not clip directly into the thumb loop. It's in that little book that comes with the cams (the one that nobody ever reads).
You might also want to be careful about trying to loosen the springs on the c3's. I thought that they needed to be tight so that will have enough friction to start camming (otherwise they just slip out).
