Hi all, i'm looking at getting my first rope to head into the great outdoors and i been following a number of posts about what rope is recommended but I was wondering if buying a rope from an online store in somewhere like the US and getting it shipped is a good or bad idea. Has other peoples stuff come through in more or less one piece?
Cheers, Adrian

buy it from rockhardware.com.au. great prices, next day delivery, and no hassle of it getting lost in international post.

i dunno what other peoples' experiences are, but i requested a quote to have a rope sent over from the states and the postage was $80. with a rope there costing 200, and the postage 80, that's 280US, or about the same as the 300-360AUD you'd pay here. of course, if you know someone going over and can bring it back, i suggest you purchase and entire rack, including rock, big wall, ice and mountaineering gear ;-)
and again, if you find a really cheap delivery method, please tell me!!! :-)

Like citationx said, bad idea unless you manage to avoid paying postage. At least if you have problems it's much easier to contact someone, and it won't take weeks to get here.

PS: Has anyone used the Faders SUM autolock belay device? Good? Bad? Meh?

When I was in the states I bought some outdoor gear from REI, completely unrelated to climbing as I wasnt into it back then. Anywho, very large chain across america. If I was going to buy anything from overseas I would get it from them. They have a hugh range of climbing gear, with reasonable shipping costs. I was going to make a substantial purchase with them but after you take into account, cost of goods + duty + shipping, it is probably better just getting it from someone like steve at rockhardware.com.au. Or your local outdoor store.
Unless you are going to make a substantial purchase, ie. in the thousands, In which case you'd probably be better of flying over there, getting all your stuff then flying home. The cost of the flight would probably be negated from the savings from the purchase, yay - free trip.
I feel your pain with buying your first rope. There are so many choices which makes it hard, in the end i just went to my local outdoor store and bought myself a very cool, mammut supersafe which I am highly impressed with. And you'd be surprised how much discount you can get through sheer bargaining power. There is just to much competition out there for them to not want your hard earn buckaroos.

faders sum is great for leading, paying out slack and catching, and a complete pain in the backside for lowering someone. still haven't managed to smoothly lower someone to the ground.
once you figure out how to do that, it's brilliant!
