umm regardless of the device used you DO have to rely 100% on your belayer

id suggest a atc and proper instruction than taking the easy way out (which could be disastrous) and usiong a gri gri.

btw - i broke my talus bone (10 months off climbing) i had an experienced belayer - he was using a gri gri - if he was using an atc i would have sustained far less serious injury due to the 'non-dynamic' belay he gave me. Dont ever discount the fact that you have to 'know your shit' to beable to belay dynamically with gri gri. With an atc there is a 'natural' dynamic belayer which occurs.

-- we now rarely - if ever - use a gri gri to belay.
