I recently purchased some pro that needed slinging with 5.5mm spectra or techcord. The shop which sold me the gear said they didn't carry spectra as normal 6mm accessory cord was adeqaute for the job.
I thought this was very dodgy and bought spectra elsewhere.
Does anyone know of any other shop or climber slinging their gear with normal cord? Is this now accepted practice?

im sure if u doubled it up it would be ok, but not desirable. theres better ways (spectra) to do it so you may as well.
or adhere to 'the leader must not fall' and buy baling twine. saves on the $$$

I still use normal nylon cord, and in theory 6mm would hold many falls, but anything smaller than 7mm I'd go with a wire.
A (very trad) #3 drilled hex only takes some brands of 7mm i.e. there's enough variation in the density of the core to make the difference between resorting to 6mm or getting 7mm through (with the aid of a pair of needlenose pliers of course).
Don't like spectra cord due to stiffness and loss of strength in the knot, do I need to post the links on the strength testing of cordellettes again?
