Another way I've done it on longer routes, requires leaving a sling at the rappel station.

You tie an overhang knot into the sling, leaving a small bight. Through the bight, you pass the thicker rope. Tie your ropes together with your favorite knot, then bring the knot up against the bight. Rappel using the thicker rope only - your weight will be on the knot, which won't slip through the bight if you made it small enough :-)

I prefer to rappel using only the single, thicker line (with the thinner line used as a retrieval cord only.) To slow down rappels on a single line, I prefer to simply add a carabiner or two at the rappel device, next to the locker biner.

This does unfortunately leave a bit of tat on the cliff.
