recommendations for mountaineering hammer/crampons 15-Mar-2006 At 12:24:16 PM ant

sliianna, I sent you a PM regarding a hammer.

Now regarding cramp-ons. Your Manta boots should take a front bail design. Look for a durable 12 point pair with horizontal front-points and aggresive secondary points. A good pair of crampons fitting this description will last for years, and be suitable for gentle days on a glacier as well as technical alpine routes and WI5 ice.

If you are buying new, then consider the latest model BD Sabretooth, Petzl Vasak or Grivel G12. Stay away from the Petzl Sarkens (they break), and Grivel G14 or Petzl M10 (too heavy for alpine unless you are climbing some winter, mixed suffer-fest with Steve House and Marko Prezelj)

If buying second hand look for Grivel G12's or the Charlet Moser Black Ice. The older BD Sabre-tooths are not very durable, due to the type of metal / casting process (they wear out quickly on rocky terrain). Make sure you do a very thorough inspection of failure points such as the front bail holes, rear binding holes and adjustment rails.

As for anti-bot plates - I don't use them personally. Anything made of plastic that you walk on is going to get trashed or broken eventually, so consider making something yourself out of thin plastic and cable-ties
