Decades ago I was told it was a good idea to wash my rope occasionally. So I did it with my first rope and it really fked it and from that day it handled really bad.
Needless to say I never did it again... however now I have a dirty rope that I am tempted to wash. Can someone either make me come to my senses or convince me that my first experience wasn’t representative of normal rope washing.
Any expert tips appreciated

I’ve done cold water in a bathtub before, agitated it a bit and then dried flaked on a tarp with fan on. Got quite a lot of dirt out and it didn’t affect handling. Haven’t tried any detergents/rope cleaners as far as I can recall.

I'm confused how you manage to "fked" your rope from washing it. Could you explain more?
Your rope is made out of nylon the same stuff as a bunch of your clothes and it is awfully hardy and resistance to a large variety of chemicals. (stay away from acids)
I've normally just used my washing machine with a bit of plain old soap. For extra paranoia I might run a rinse through beforehand.
For more comprehensive chemical resistance:

So according to that if you wash your rope in gasoline and honey your are all good! :-p

Yeah, kero bath after your gran is done with with it.
I tried washing a rope once, and it shed lots of fibres and pretty much wrecked. I just use a wet towel now, pull it through a few times until looks cleaner than before.

Thanks all. You’ve told me all I need to hear and I will give the old dirty old fella a quick rinse off.
Anyway as for my previous experience it would have been about 1985 when I was 14 so I cannot remember what I did other than stick it in mums washing machine with no soap. Maybe it was the hemp / water reaction? I

Brush the rope first in the bath or bucket of water to get rid of the surface grot.
I've had excellent results on many ropes in a front loading washing machine on cold gentle cycle, using Lux pure soap flakes (the unscented version). Dissolve about 1/4 cup of the soap flakes in hot water then dilute to lukewarm before adding to the wash. Run an extra couple of rinse cycles. Spin is ok.
