between using uni club gear, booty and the sets of nuts i eventually bought for my rack i reckon i've tried most of the nuts out there. I haven't found too much difference between the different brands, but have noticed two important distinctions between the shape. As these are often competing interests, you should probably aim to get a set of each in the long run.

1. flat vs chiselled (eg wc rocks/bd stoppers vs dmm walnuts/metoluis curve nuts)

needless to say, the flat ones will work better in smooth cracks, while the chiselled ones are useful when things are a bit lumpy.

2. rectangluar vs parellogram x section (when viewed from top of nut)

a rectangluar shape will mean that each nut effectively has two different sizes as (especially with the larger ones) you can place them sideways, while a parellogram shaped nut can often be placed in backwards (i.e. with the smaller paralell side facing out) in small niches that a rectangluar nut won't fit in.
