Having weight at the top of the pack is fine if you've got modest weight and are just pootling along a track...the pack does sit more easily and is definitely more comfortable. But if you've got a (really) heavy pack and/or you are walking off-track or scrambling or climbing, having the centre of gravity up too high not only makes it exhausting for your trunk muscles but can easily topple you over (yes, I am relatively 'massive' and have a huge arse...er, I mean a low centre of gravity). Under these situations a high centre of gravity can be quite dangerous.
