This is the right attutide;a little consideration for other people.

In terms of packs, having the weight at the top is much better than having the weight at the bottom. A reasonable harness will distribute the weight better onto the hips with the weight at the top. Weight at the bottom creates a moment about your hips and pulls your shoulders back. This not only adds to the weight carried by your shoulders but also is bad for your posture. Weight at the top can cause less massive people to lose balance forward if they lean forward but this is less severe than leaning back and being flipped back. Not to mention you can probably walk for another hour at the end of the day with it at the top.

Obviously the bulk of the weight 3/4 up, in line with your shoulder blades is ideal. However this is not always achieveable.
