If you are intending on buying something climbing specific, then ask the assistant if there's any climbers on the floor. I'm at paddy's at the moment and i can tell you i know exactly where to get camp tricams and if you're going mtneering then you need adj legloops!! It really depends who you ask.
i also disagree with not buying a pack with a large capacity just because you are not tall etc. There are some really good packs out there in the 85L range, Osprey and Macpac spring to mind ;), that have harnesses built for smaller builds. Osprey even allows components of the harness to be swapped for different builds ie long back length but skinny waist. Also the hip belt should be positioned with the top of the hip bone (the pointy bit) in the middle of the belt.
Btw i'd be happy to get PMs from people who've had less than satisfactory service at paddy's... :P
