I use M9s approach. If you don't understand the reasons behind what they are saying then keep drilling them till you do or they back out and change topic.

In the end you are buying gear not advice. They don't get paid like mountain guides so you can't expect them to have more than basic experience. Luckily, some have much more.

As far as packs go...keep it simple with durable materials and it will serve you well. And get a big one provided it fits...can't have too much space but you can have too little.

The idea behind positioning the weight is if its high you don't have to lean fwd so much. If its low you are more stable on uneaven ground. Closer to your back means leaning fwd less too. When you walk your total centre of gravity (including pack) ends up over your feet.
