Yeah the advice about packing heavy stuff close to your body and at the top is actually true. Make sure that your harness straps are adjusted properly though (good sales assistants will do that for you) – it makes a huge difference. Also chose one that is the right size for you – you should only carry up to 1/3 of your body weight – so don’t be tempted to get a 85L pack unless you’re 6’3. I’ve got a Macpac Glissade rucksack (women’s version) which I’m really happy with – it’s survived a number of bushwalking trips and a trip around Europe. I also love the removable lid which can be used as a bum-bag for day trips, and because it’s got 2 compartments I can get to stuff at the bottom of my pack without unpacking it. But there are cheaper packs which are probably just as good. Also depends what you want to use the pack for.
