I rekon the biner method is definately better than a munter, cause the munter twists the ropes too much.
A friend of mine was climbing a 8 or so pitch route in Red Rocks and dropped his ATC (for the second time that trip), so abselied on munter. after a while they could hardly pull the ropes cause of the twist, and when they pulled the ropes of the second to last abseil they stuck right near the end. There was a couple of people coming down after them, and they undid the rope - but said that it had tied a figure 8 around the chains!
I've used the biner method loads of times and find it pretty straight forward.
