If your friend isn't planning on using it overseas in alpine conditions they could probably get away with a much lighter all weather tent. As patto said, the Exped Venus 2 is an excellent option. I have one and have used it above the snowline many times without issue. The duel door and vestibules are great especially for winter as you have plenty of space to sort out your gear.
Some alternatives include the WE First Arrow, Macpac Minaret/Olympus or Hilleberg Nallo 2/3. I know the first arrow and minaret are quite small and the olympus isn't a lightweight option. Don't know much about the Hillebergs but have heard good things.
