Why the whole 50m??
I use a 2m length of black 19mm poly pipe and slide it up and down the rope as I go over the edge of cliffs. Its helpful to carry a Velcro wrap around protector or two if you find sharp edges down the route.

These will keep your whole rope protected. NOTHING! will harm your rope if you use these.

I bet you do...

Why do you want to cover the whole rope? In general climbing ropes are designed to take a fair bit of wear and tear. You can get thick pvc to wrap around any bits that are running over edges when setting up an anchor but it really depends on what you're doing. You can't run a rope protector through an atc...

In addition to commercially available units, you can fashion one out of almost anything. A square of carpet for instance; I've used a backpack as an impromtu rope protector (for abseils not top rope setups). But, if you think you need a 40M long rope protector then in all likely hood you need a better anchor location, or a hardier rope, or you just need to stop worrying.

Hi Simeon, climbing's tons of fun, keep it up. As far as finding something to protect the whole rope you may struggle though if you're top roping you really only need to protect the section of the anchor that runs over an edge, using something like this. I usually use either a square of carpet or mostly just my jumper.

If you're getting into leading (trad) than its good to find/have a mentor who can show you all about rope management.

Have fun and stay safe.

~> Sounds like a job for the Natidreamteam&cicada!

I will take a guess that climbing dude wants to protect his expensive new rope from wear while top-roping, and doesn't fully understand the concept that rope protectors remain in-situ* at sharp rock locations, to protect the entire length of rope while that rope passes over/through the rub-point protection (fixed in place*) during use.
?

(* Note for clarification: in-situ = fixed in place)

( cicada replaces ODH!)

I doubt it. After several attempts over a couple of days to post the same message, I'd say that attests to sincerity.

There is a good chance that he and cicada could team up (being similar initial posters?), and displace the Natidreamteam off their top pedestal placing...
"Move over! We are putting a tyrolean up here! Now, where does that rope protector go again?"
Heh, heh, heh.

Sweet! Just out of curiosity, where do you do most of your climbing around Melbourne?

Sorry "climbing dude", you're attracting jokes because it is a very unusual request, which given your post history (or lack of) and relative 'newness' to the sport will be assumed ignorance rather than genuine... Ropes are generally made to withstand quite a lot of wear and tear.. The only time they really need 'a protector' is when running across sharp edges.. If it is running across 40meters of sharp edges i'ed rethink your route..

Perhaps you could elaborate, that would remove our need to poke fun..

Don't take the comments personally dude! Have you had much experience in handling ropes and anchor setups etc? I've never used a rope protector and have never found it to be a problem. The more gear you add to a setup the more complex and potentially tough to handle it is. I'd say if you need 5 rope protectors then the setup is not ideal...

50m rope protector?
Really long (~50m) of pipe or hose and feed the rope through it?
Or maybe a few rolls of tape and wrap the whole thing - replace as needed . . .
Or just don't worry - the outer sheath protects the inside bit which is the real rope . . .

Well, in that case just roll it up in some paper . . .
Mmm, nice - what were protecting again . . .
