As a former site manager I can tell you surveyors tape has a lifespan of 18 months max.
For longer term marking and cheaper, but more of a fiddle, is the tape used to wrap boxes.
Dont use the blue as it is often stolen by birds and fades quickest. The yellow is most uv resistant, is as visible as dogs nuts, lasts for ages. However, dont tie the knots tight as it fractures the coating and will begin to brakdown.
Can find tonnes of it for free in bins and behind factories (and in my area behind all the display warehouses).
