All the 'facts' around strength loss due to knots have been thrown around and confused ever since the first tests were done. Just like the clove hitch one - people often dump on this as being the weakest but, being a hitch, it depends what you tie it around. Tie a clove hitch and a re-threaded fig 8 around a 100mm steel tube and I'll bet the clove hitch comes up better. I reckon that the bottom line is that if you're pushing your system so hard that you're worried about knot differences then there are probably other things you should be worried about first - like you. 12kN directed on a human body in a para harness (ie parallel to the spine in a full body harness) can result in significant injury.
