For my money the best softshell is a RAB vapour-rise. It's made out of pertex shell fabric with a very light pile liner.

It is incredibly breathable, and has good water and wind resistance - also has a great hood. Great for everything except for standing around in pouring rain when you'd want a shell. It's also very light and low bulk. If you find Goretex sweaty and too hot when moving, and then wet (from sweat) and cold when you stop then you would like it.

Super versatile as you can push sleeves up and vent chest zip when hot but then when you stop or conditions change it's nice and warm particularly because of the hood and the breathability which ensures it's nice and dry. For that reason it's perfect for climbing.
