I was going to suggest that, and yes you use other networks (whatever is available) with 000 and 112 (international emergency) calls..

BUT

I am with Virgin (therefore, on Optus) and its worth noting that sometimes I get very little, very crappy coverage. Particularly in the pines. So it gives you between no bars highlighted, and 1 bar... yet I dont believe (and I could well be wrong) that it will attempt to connect through another provider in that case as it thinks it has some service... enough to not let it try other networks, but not enough to actually call them.

Would not like to rely on my connection for that to be honest.
