For an ipad, a waterproof map case will hold them. Again, same as the iphone, the touch pad seems to work fine through the plastic. I'd be more worried about simply breaking the larger ipad. Keep the ipad in the vehicle, take the phone with you to the crag. I have a small pelican type case to put my iphone in so it is safe in my pack.
