I roll the unbent stock across the ground (on a piece of ply actually, for smooth rolling) with the rubber handle of a shifter, while holding the cutting disc against it. With the right pressure and timing (ie. a few practice goes) I can cut a continuous spiral as I roll, representing the perfect notch depth and notch spacing. Apart from being quicker, my theory is that the a spiral thread means that I never have multiple notches lining up at any given point of the rods circumference, thus minimising a reduction in the working thickness and strength at any one point. This means my 'spiral' notch can be deeper too, thus better glue bonding power. But mainly it's just quicker (perhaps not as quick as Mikls rig) but it also makes an very attractive U-bolt (at least for only you to appreciate until it is glued in). I also noticed it's easier on the cutting disc. The 'dab' method of notching seems very hard on discs for some reason.
