I'll concede the search for his name was half arsed... The name was too common on Web of Knowledge and so I got lazy and just went through the personal list... I also didn't read your first post too carefully either... thought the last sentence said sunscreen won't cause cancer instead of there's no evidence for it... Reading too many tabs/windows at the same time -_-

However in response to some of the points... yes if you inhale enough water it can be bad for you... but the mechanism which it kills you with is associated with displacing oxygen and doesn't cause necrosis or other anything else associated with a toxin... There's no reason to suspect introducing it into the body any other way. ZnO on the other hand causes fever like symptoms when inhaled and on closer reading on one of the links I posted earlier (http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/healthguidelines/zincoxide/recognition.html)
"Repeated exposures to zinc oxide by skin contact have resulted in papular-pustular skin eruptions in the axilla, inner thigh, inner arm, scrotum and pubic areas."

The concentrations found in the sun screen probably won't cause anything (it has gone though enough testing to be approved by the TGA) but it does have known side effects.

Anyway, one of points that probably wasn't raised too clearly before (when I didn't read your last sentence properly...) is that there has been no long term study on the health effects on these products. Asbestos has been used for centuries yet the first documented connection to mesothelioma and asbestosis was in 1924
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2304688/pdf/brmedj05824-0015a.pdf)

I was going to say was that we can make guesses on how ZnO and TiO2 particles may or may not cause diseases and test whether or not those concerns are warranted. There's no evidence now, but there hasn't been enough time yet to know for sure...
