Most climbing helmets comply with The UIAA Standard. The UIAA standard is based on the European Standard for climbing helmets (I don't think Australia has its own Standards specifically for climbing/mountaineering, we probably do for rope access though).

How this all compare to a Bike helmet, I don't know...you can't view the standards for free on the internet (pisses me off when they do that with this sort of information...but they have to cover their costs...). If anyone does have access to these sorts of documents they are European standard EN1078 and the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2063, it would be interesting to make a comparison...
