Hi,

Anybody know where I can find customised chalk bags in Melbourne, or know anyone who makes them? I'm looking for one that looks like a cat.

Toy cats wear out quickly. Get and gut a real one.

Well, not that I desperately need one, but I like the idea of being half way up a big multi-pitch route with all your gear, and a big furry "cat" hanging off you. Besides, its funny to pull chalk out of the cat's ass!

Looks like I can't find them commercially, so I'd be happy to work out something if you know how to make one. I can't sew for nuts...

There are a few sites that have patterns for a variety of home made chalk bags... I have made some in crochet (for that homespun hippy look) but I reckon a furry cat one with its butt being the "put your hand in "end would be fab! With a freaked out expression on it's face... It would look great in pics.

Here are some patterns if anyone is interested i having a go. But i reckon the hand puppet idea is fab - might need a fairly large one, but with some minor modifications... mmmm...

My initial sketch (excuse the rough drawing!)

This might be just the thing for a little PhD procrastination!

Could you make it so the head flips back and you're reaching down its throat? The front paws could be the start of the waist belt.

though the idea of a draw string bung hole is pretty funny too...

Laughing out loud!

Your belt clips remind me of blowies buzzing about!

~> also as mentioned above, incorporating the feet into the belt makes practical sense to me.

Yup, you've hit the nail right on the head jacq, that's exactly what I was thinking of / looking for. Now... anyone with sewing skills who wants to make one fore me? I will compensate you fairly, but I get to choose the cat of course!

Someone at the gym who had a chalk bag like that said she got it 8 years ago from some lady who hand made them down in Geelong. Anyone know who she is or if she is still around?

Well I'm going shopping later and will look for some fabric to make a prototype... My husband (bless his nerdy soul) has found a bunch of sites where you can buy little speaker devices where you can record sounds and play them back - like the sort you get in those greeting cards and has already come up with ways of making it meow when you stick your hand in it. (It is getting more and more disturbing!) I did some designs of the cat the other way around, so you are putting you hand down it's throat too. Nearly as disturbing - but not quite.

I would love to know if the woman in Geeling still makes them though - I'd hate to inadvertently copy what she has done before.

I will tell my supervisor that my thesis has stalled because I was researching how to make cat chalk bags where you stick your hand in it's bottom to get chalk - and see what she says... :)

Haven't seen Chloe in 15 years. The lawnmower man took her away from us (it was a modern family).

jacq my dogs do the toy cats. We've got quite a few, no way I'll stick my hand in them. Claude may be old but he's still got it. Marys favourite is the toy tiger.
