Hi there
I'm new to the forum, so this may have been raised before.
I'm close to ordering a Mont Icicle jacket because I'm planning a trip to some cold altitude spots in winter in Mexico and later to high points in NZ.
Anyone got one of these and can shed some light on the pros and cons?

Mont make good kit and I think the icicle is one of the better ones on the market: good and tough face fabric, nice quality down, reasonably lightweight, well priced, great no-frills design and quality construction. It's not the lightest on the market, but for a do-everything / buy once and use it for years jacket, you can't go wrong.

Yeah thanks Brendan I needed a lame reply like that.

Thanks Rudi, I kinda got a similar response from someone else outside of this forum, so I went ahead and bought the Icicle.
I did a fair bit of research on many other brands and pretty well came to my own conclusions.
Just needed some confirmation.
Cheers

I've got one of these, I love it. It's 2 years old, but still looks pretty new despite being bashed around and lived over many winter weekend, but only for cragging. A lot tougher than the competition.
(Rudi - how's things, how'd the wedding go?)

I don't think Brendans response was so lame, he just didn't think about where you are going. I probally wouldn't buy a down jacket but I'm not planning to go to a dry high altitude venue.

No, I wasn't looking for only positive responses, but I've had more pluses for it outside of this forum anyway.
You are the one out, so I'll go for the majority vote.
What will you be taking to your venues?

I like my icicle, though as has been pointed out by Brendan it won't suit as a belay jacket in wet conditions, for those you want synthetic. That said it was great as a belay jacket in Canada 18 months ago (super cold and dry), and while ski-touring in Oz and NZ. Only quibble (and I note the OR jacket linked mentions this specifically) the hood doesn't really fit comfortably over a helmet.

I also agree that it is not a great belay jacket in damp conditions. But it depends even then on what mountaineering you do -- for summer NZ I'd still take a down jacket, because it's not that cold so you pretty much only wear it in the hut at the end of the day -- and I much prefer a cosy downy for kicking about in over the synthetic.
(Adrian: wedding is not until the first week of August. We'll be spending the week after chilling out in the Bluies (in our downys, drinking lattes haha). Looking forward to it!)
