I bought a 2nd hand 1994 station wagon (before the liberty existed - i think) with 170,000km for $4200 in 2006 and sold it 2 years later for $3600. Was a top notch vehicle for the dodgy country roads I was on at the time, however had a few issues with feature-type things. Nothing typical of subarus though. e.g. previous owner had severed the hot air inlet pipe so it had no heating in the snow!

Really the only thing you'd need to check is the clunkiness of the 4WD (to see if it's been used at all, or just for city driving). Later AWD models won't have this problem. And you'll hear it over and over again, they tend to burn through CV joints faster than other cars. So factor replacements in if it hasn't had them done in the last 5-8 years.

My sister's bloke just paid $4000 for a 1995 hatchback GS, but the computer was a bit rooted and he ended up paying nearly $1500 to dodgy mechanics who didn't fix the problem.

Anyway, they're very nice vehicles, but require a bit of care. Not like toyotas which you can abuse and still have going strong. The models got a lot nicer after ~2000 when they started to fix up some of the niggling technical issues with AWD and the extra features, so if you can afford later then I'd recommend it.
