When you buy 4 or 3mm cable from a boating shop such as BIAS or Whitworth's they allow you to use a swaging device. I have done this to make a seriously long cable lock (10m +).
Surely the spec for marine grade exceeds our needs as climbers - cable is frequently used for mast stays (from the top of the mast to the deck and/or spreaders).

I do not know what it is that will stop the cables slipping past each other under load on a lead fall, except at time of construction, your own hands pushing against the long arms of the tool press. And this is why the marine shop will not do it for you.

It freaks me out a bit that one abseil deep inside Danae Canyon, where someone a few years ago bolted in a single cable with 2 thimbled ends. But it is still there.
