Where are ropes going? |

I expect circular section rope will be replaced with flat tape in the future. As technology advances, ropes will get thinner but unless they become flat, they will be too thin for comfortable handing. Material like kevlar is plenty strong enough - the challenge is to make it dynamic. That's as much in the weave of the tape or the twist of the fibres as it is in the chemistry. We might also see them being spooled rather than coiled, in order to keep them neat and free of twists.
Of course tape will need new belay devices - I expect tape and belay devices to be sold as complete systems.
