Solo Top Rope with Mini-Traxion. 23-Jun-2005 At 3:54:18 PM CJ

I've been using the Mini Traxion for a bit over 12 months and it generally works a treat. It's especially good for sussing out new routes and general solo mucking about when you either don't have a belayer, or don't want to waste their time. Some things to keep in mind though.
I use a DMM belay Master biner with the Mini Traxion as the plastic sleeve keeps the unit orientated correctly and prevents the screw gate coming undone inadvertently.

The teeth are quite sharp, but taking falls onto the unit does not seem to cause excessive wear to the sheath. Might be different if you were using it every day!

I have mainly used the set up on slabby, vertical and slightly over vertical walls... steep stuff and routes where falling involves loosing contact with the face could be problematic. Probably best to carry prusiks or a Tibloc etc.

Logistics play a big part in use. Access to tops of cliffs, bomber anchors, loose rocks and direction and oreintation all must be considered before use. In some cases it's just too much of a pain to set up in the first place.

Use a rope protector for obvious reasons.

Weighting the rope with a pack really helps. That bit of tension in the rope allows the Traxion to slide effortlessly. However even with no weighting there is sufficient mass in the rope after about 6-8 m for the unit to work fine above this height.

Weighting the rope then makes subsequent rapping a chore. The best thing is to tie a full length rope off at half way and have 2 strands hanging down the route. 1 weighted for solo TR the other free for rapping.

There was an article some time back on Planet Fear about this stuff. It give a bit of an introduction to the pros and cons of various devces including the Mini Traxion.
