Dear Dr Good, don't fall off your soap box, what I wrote is totally correct, but I wrote in laymans terms. What you wrote is also correct, but a technical explanation and seemingly based on text, not experience.
A fall that exerts less than 6kn on you (as they are designed to do, btw 6kn = approx 600kg shock load), but enough to make a industrial shock absorber deploy WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE HIT BY A TRUCK!
I was making the point that to call them a shock absorber is a slight misnomer, you will still receive a significant level of shock loading. Anyone who takes a sufficient fall to deploy their absorber will have at least "quote [ one or two tender spots.]"
Also, it is virtually impossible to have yourself tied in as per regulations then fall a sufficient distance to fully extend a industrial screamer as you describe, to do so would negate it's ability to lessen forces to a controlled degree.
PS, I agree with Phil on the ability of certain friction shock absorbers to be re-useable and the possibility of a smaller version made to protect suss pro placement, I've toyed with the idea of inventing a tear-type that uses velcro and deploys in a controlled manner, thus reusable. Particularly useful for the "larger" climber! :o) |
