if you are using the shunt on a top rope set up, the fall factor should be very small. Topping out may be a problem, but falling say 1m with 4m of rope above you shouldn't be creating an excessive load. Definitely tie an anti decking knoot (i use the alpine butterfly).
From my experience the problem is more about failure to lock rather than rope chopping. This is only personal theory (and practice).
I have used the shunt (sounds like there's some people out there who would use the Kath & Kim pronuciation) for top rope, with only one failure (as i previously mentioned) and continue to use the grio gri for lead soloing.
these days i mostly have a climbing partner, however there are still some days where i have to go it alone, at a couple of grades lower than my top end.
