you can modify a gri gri by filing off the little flap that folds over the 'climber' end of the rope. (don't forget to smooth off the edges)this gives you a better rope run, without weakening the gri gri.
more to the point, you can lead with this, fasten the rope to the bottom of the climb, stick the rest in a small pack and it feeds through the gri gri. (there's a little more to it. ask if interested)

i've decked top roping with a shunt, mostly because i couldn't resist the temptation to grab it when i fell, which of course stopped it from working. if you do use one, have it on a sling, which means you're going faster when it bites (making it more likely to lock) and it's harder to grab.
