I hired a Nikon Coolscan 4000 from Kayell in Melbourne for 100ish bucks for a weekend. It had a batch attachment that would do about 50 slides in an hour or so. It gives up to about 60Mb Tiff files with 5500pixels along the long edge. I think the sharpness is limited by the method of projection or something other than the sensitivity of the sensor itself. Anyway I was more than happy with the results and think they'd come out pretty sharp at A3.
I managed to get through about 1000 slides over a weekend (admittedly I didn't do an awful lot else that weekend). Its a pretty cheap way to get that backlog of slides onto your pc.
