I want to buy one of these for my husband for his birthday. I've seen some online but would like to grab one today in Melbourne. Has anyone seen these around, or have any experience with them? I think they'd be a great alternative to headlamps/candle lanterns in the evening at camp...

My experience of them, sadly, is that they're crap. With anything battery powered, the quality of the battery is the crux of the whole operation. So, cheap ones are absolutely hopeless, usually using lead-acid batteries that hate weird charge/discharge cycles. If you find one with a Li-ion or Ni-Cad battery, it'll probably be worth the price premium.

It might be. Check the User's Profile for this poster.
"Misanthrope" = noun. Hater of mankind, sour recluse.

Happy to entertain, kuu. I prefer to remain anonymous - you meet lots of nutters online ;-)
The question is genuine however.
evanbb - that's a shame. I work in sustainability and have seen a lot of projects promoting these lights in developing countries. I wonder whether there are the same problems? (I'm a social scientist, not a technical person - have no idea how these types of lights differ...)

You're welcome! It's funny though, most of the "nutters online" prefer to remain anonymous.
Apologies for any offence.
