tele originated in Norway, but alpine bindings came later. tele was designed for skiing in deep flully powder with a bad boot-ski interface (pre-alpine days). dropping the knee which = lifting the heel which = the weight is evenly distributed between your front foot & the ball of your rear foot & (after much trial & error & cursing) you have more control. But its a moot point with modern (releasable) alpine bindings.

cross-country skiing is not the same as (modern) telemark - modern tele bindings have springs & there is quite a bit of resistance to your heel lifting - its not a free pivot. You can do reasonably good alpine turns on modern tele bindings if you really want (& its late in the day & you've been skiing with that 20kg pack for the last 8hrs....).

as for what's good & bad for skiing where you will be skiing (I'm in Canada & so am not going to bother as what is good for here may not be *quite* the same as Oz).... there are better nerd-web-forums to ask q's about skiing... there are a few people on chockstone who do ski well & do know about the gear but no-one ever seems to give proper responses.
