I agree with Eduardo, the AT set up is worth considering. AT boots allow for easier walking than telemark boots, quite useful for Oz bush approaches below snowline. Crampons can be fitted to AT boots, I have seen some guys summer mountaineering in them around Mt Cook. No need to learn a new technique, just lock the heel and downhill ski. The drawback is lack of choice in Oz and cost. Having said that, Telemarking is a very graceful and satisfying discipline of skiing, and if you are actually looking to perfect that, gear range and cost are both good here. I would hire the gear and get a lesson at a resort, to fast track progress.
