could it be similar to concrete cancer? where the old iron mesh that was laid down for concrete rusts due to leaks, something-or-other* with alkalinity, and it causes carbon dioxide which then bubbles, expands, and 'explodes' the concrete - weakening the structure - leaving cracks, which then allow more moisture in, temps get lower, moisture freezes, expanding cracks more blah blah blah I'm sure you get where it's going ... *does anyone really know how this works? I just know the basic concept ... rusty fixed gear always spooks me for that reason ... does it just apply to concrete or does it also apply rto rock? or only certain rock types that have a certain level of alkalinity???
