The typical technique for belayers at the moment seems to be: stand against the wall, but not directly below the climber, for the first three clips.. after that do whatever you like, you can move out, stay close, move to the side and so on..... so long as they don't think you'll drop your climber they don't seem to mind what you do
It would be good to hear from someone who actually works in a gym though... is the above accurate? This is just what i've seen rather than what i've been told.
