You are talking about a bod or alpine bod style harness. They are designed that way so you can put them on while wearing skis or crampons, there more intended for glacier travel. I bought a black diamond one a few years ago, the instructions said that it was ok for pretty much everything except lead climbing. Having said that I know a number of people who do use them lead climbing. expect the plastic leg buckles to blow in a big fall.
