3-4 months is wierd.
bones heal in about 6 weeks.
connective tissue takes longer.

get a second opinion.
talk to whichever of the athlon boys is working. (http://www.athlon.com.au)
they're serious about maintaining function.
medical bone blokes tend to be a bit simple minded & scalpel happy.
