Add to that the fact that your appetite can be suppressed when hot and thirsting, and it's hard to stop halfway up a pitch for a sandwich instead of a sip from a Camelback. The sugar is irrelevant anyway apart from a bit of energy it provides, it's added to electrolyte mixes to make the salts palatable. It's the latter that enable correct hydration.
