Wendy - if you're considering surgery for CTS then for goodness sake go see a good manual therapist first (ie physio, osteo, myotherapist etc). To echo Bel's comments above, there's a wide range of musculoskeletal problems - many of them originating in the neck, thoracic spine and brachial plexus which produce the similar symptoms. Myofascial trigger points may also contribute to some of the symptoms.

Might cost you a little in money and time, and you may need to hunt around to find the right person, but that said there are certainly reports in the literature of people undergoing surgery without change and/or with incomplete resolution of symptoms.

Surgery can give great results, but its price is that it's invasive and therefore not without risk. Similarly, cortisone has its issues also (see other thread in this forum) and again, if I were you I'd try something which doesn't involve medication and/or injections first before heading down that path.
